Sharpen your pencils and lace up your tennis shoes! In this fast-paced, independent mini-course, you will sprint your way from idea to finished short story with author Naomi Kinsman. Choose one of three approaches: Spend a Saturday with the Inklings: Throw a writing party and work your way from beginning to end in three+ supercharged hours. Write over four weekends: Break the writing process up so you can spend more time drafting and building your skills along the way. Create a masterpiece in six weeks: Give yourself the luxury of time for each stage of the writing process. You'll have time to stretch your skills, explore possibilities outside your comfort zone, and invest time in polishing and revising your work. ... Or try all three!

What kind of magical story might you write?

Process:

After brainstorming a couple story concepts, each writer will choose one fantastical world to develop. Then, we'll develop a main character and a flexible plot. Next, we'll race the clock in a series of short drafting sessions. Finally, writers will choose one of three quick revision strategies, and then transform their story into a colorful book to share with family and friends.

Goals:

Writers will:

  • practice making quick decisions
  • strengthen their writing stamina
  • learn to both start AND finish a story
