What's the DW all about?

The Drafting Workshop is a community where Inklings get inspired, connect, and most importantly, draft onward!

W H E N S H O U L D I L O G O N ?

We've set up the DW so that you can pop on whenever your schedule allows. Plus, you can also connect with us live each week at any of these sessions:

⇢ Tuesdays, 3 pm PT / 6 pm ET

⇢ Wednesdays, 5:30 pm PT / 8:30 pm ET

⇢ Thursdays, 4:15 pm PT / 7:15 pm ET

Our login link is always the same:

W H Y T H R E E D A Y S A W E E K ? We offer three sessions per week so you can choose the one that works best for your schedule. While you're welcome to attend more than one day per week, we start with a topic on Thursday, and then repeat similar material on the following Tuesday and Wednesday. Check out the upcoming live sessions on your Drafting Workshop home page.

Draft your manuscript in whatever program you prefer. You'll have a chance to screenshare a few pages of your writing in our monthly feedback sessions if you like.

C A N I G E T F E E D B A C K ?

We love that you're ready to share your work! There are a couple ways you can share your writing and get feedback as part of the DW. Toggle the options below to learn more.

Feedback Sessions

On the third Thursday of the month, and the following Tuesday and Wednesday, we focus on feedback. We encourage you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to bring a page or two of writing. You can easily let us know by responding to the weekly email you'll receive before the session.

We encourage you to also bring a question for us to discuss with regard to your piece.

For instance, do you want to know: ✶ What we know (and don't) about your main character

✶ What draws us in and where (if anywhere) we feel lost

✶ How you might add an element (conflict, humor, surprise, etc) to the scene

It's always much more helpful to ask for feedback on a piece of work that is not yet finished, so that the feedback helps you as you continue to work on the scene.

Mentor Feedback

You may have realized that you're ready for more personalized feedback. If so, consider adding a once-per-month mentorship session to your Drafting Workshop enrollment. In this one-on-one session, you'll have the chance to collaborate with a mentor on your work, set goals, track progress, and build your overall writerly skills. To switch your Drafting Workshop Community Member subscription to a Drafting Workshop Mentorship that includes a once a month 45-minute meeting with a mentor, visit this link.

NEED MORE?

If you're at the point where you need a full manuscript editorial read from a mentor, want week-by-week detailed feedback, or would like to complete a full-novel revision in preparation for publication, we also have more in-depth one-on-one mentorships to support you. Email Naomi at naomi@younginklings.org for more information. Your parent or guardian can also schedule a meeting with Naomi to discuss mentorship at this link:

In the Drafting Workshop, connect with your peers in our live sessions, and also as part of the discussions in our community section. Ready to introduce yourself, recommend a book, or ask for problem-solving advice? Visit this link.

If you've made a friend or two in the Drafting Workshop who you would like to connect with outside of this forum, reach out to Sonja at sonjaic@younginklings.org to let her know. We will reach out to your fellow writer's guardian to ask them if we may connect your guardian with theirs to set up a connection outside of our space. This way, we can keep you safe online, and also support your growing friendships with other creative writers in our community.

In the Drafting Workshop, connect with your mentors in the live sessions. You may also reach out by replying to any of our Drafting Workshop emails to let us know if you're stuck with your writing, need help finding a resource, or have another question. You can also share with us about how things are going for you in the Drafting Workshop with your monthly check-in, which you can access on the home page.

The most important thing to do is to WRITE! However, we're always here when you're looking for inspiration and camaraderie.

One thing you can do is to join the conversation with counselors, other Drafting Workshoppers, and mentors. Not sure what you'd say? Not to worry! We have questions and prompts to get you started. And you can also ask your own questions and start conversations about topics you're most interested in, too. Join the conversation here.

We also have a growing collection of inspiring material and resources from past months of the Drafting Workshop. Here are a few examples:
