Choose a scene in which a character tells a story. It could be a story from their past—shared to make someone laugh or to create a connection. It could also be a story that helps explain an element of the world of your story or the problem your character is facing. Write the beginning of the scene, and then invite a friend to collaborate with you. What interruption could show up as the story is being told? Let the surprise be part of the fun, and try to balance between the character's need to tell the story (or the listeners' desire to hear it) and the interruption that might continue to get in the way. If the interruption is easily resolved, ask your collaborator for another interruption. Challenge yourself!
